Description

"Peashooter" horns like the 58B were commonly used in early jazz, most notably Duke Ellington's orchestra. Before studio post-production, players had to "hit" the microphone, and these were the horns of choice by those early pioneers of the recording industry.
This Conn Cavalier silver plated “Pea Shooter” trumpet was most likely made in the late 1920’s, although Conn Cavalier instruments are hard to date precisely. Its serial number is (#611XX) and it’s in good condition. It has a few very minor dents (especially on the bell throat – see pictures) but none that are noticeable or that will have any effect on how this cornet plays. We see no signs of any previous significant damage or repair. The valves work well and all the slides pull nicely. The silver plating and gold wash in the bell are a bit tarnished, but we think this horn will polish up nicely. There is some plating wear along the first tuning slide (see pictures), but otherwise we see no thin or worn spots. We have run this cornet through our professional brasswind shop to put it into good playing condition.
The case is not original, we are just using it to protect the instrument. It’s in good condition with only moderate wear from age. The handle, latches and hinges all work as they should.
